Letting Go

And without faith it is impossible to please God (Heb 11:6)…

Having kicked off our “40 Days of Faith” on Sunday, I was hugely excited to arrive (somewhat late!) at our Monday morning staff meeting to find everybody discussing what steps of faith they were going to take during the next six weeks.

The ideas were buzzing…”I feel called to pray more”, “I feel led to be bolder in my choices”, “I think it is time to focus on this specific issue”.  And it wasn’t long before the conversation moved inevitably in my direction – what is God calling YOU to do Al?

For me, this question is what the “40 Days” is all about.

Do consider it now for yourself…What is God calling YOU to do during these next 40 days?

As I considered it afresh this week, I found myself reflecting on Hebrews 11:6 “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believes that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him“.

It is a somewhat sobering verse as it reminds us yet again, that we are not called to a dry religion or code of behavior but to a dynamic relationship with God that relies on faith.  It requires faith to seek God, it requires faith to live out this relationship, and it is therefore faith that pleases God.

Honestly, for me this is what is most exciting about being a Christian – it is why I get out the bed in the morning!

Think how boring Christianity would be if all we had to do is follow some basic pattern of rules like robots.  Rather God invites us to live our life with him – a life in which he repeatedly nudges us to step out and in response, we not only get to see him move in power but we get changed, built up, encouraged, transformed, healed and released as well!  Not bad…no wonder the bible says faith pleases God!

And so it was with this in mind, that I was so excited to discuss what God is leading the staff to do.  What better question can there be for Christians to discuss?  It could be so many things.

Perhaps he is asking you to draw closer to Him in prayer or study.  Perhaps He is leading you to do something practical to reach out to somebody, perhaps you sense it is time to get involved in some new way in the church or the community or to do something new at work.  It could be any number of things.

But whatever it is, it seems to me that the key is to ask the question and then do something…do something because we believe that is what God wants us to do.  If that is our motivation then we can be reassured that God will reward and bless our efforts.

So, what is God calling ME to do these 40 Days?  Well, I feel the Lord leading me into an exercise of trust during these “40 Days”.  I had a dream the other day in which I was asked to preach a sermon at a moments notice…I was freaked out but the Lord gave me the words just as I stepped up to the lectern.  I woke in a cold sweat!

It reminded me that in the midst of all that is going on with the family, with Niki’s health, with the amazing developments at the church and with our ongoing search for a new venue I tend to get stressed because I am trying to do it all in my own strength.

Instead, the Lord has reminded me that He will provide.  That He is the one who makes things happen not me.  Sometimes a step of faith involves doing less, being still and letting God act – and that is something of what God has for me this season.

So, this 40 Days I am actively aiming to slow down…to “be still and know that he is God”.  To intentionally take more time to pray each day, actively taking my days off and trusting He will give me the words to my talks when I need them.

We shall see how it goes…!

Can I invite you to do something similar?  To pursue your own sense of what God is saying to you.  Thinking firstly, about this key question…

What is God calling you to do during these next 40 Days?
